Why is the world losing color?
Something strange is happening to our modern world. It’s going grey.
I don’t mean we are going old. (That’s true as well).
But that we are literally becoming colorless.
Think I am joking? Well, see for yourself.
Then
And now
I know what you are thinking - That’s just the sky being grey vs blue.
But did you look at the cars?
See this picture for instance
Most cars today are 3 colors - Grey, Black & White
And it’s not just our cars.
It’s everything else.
Our Clothes
Our homes
Our Objects
Here is a color analysis of ~200 household objects every year from 1800 till today.
Notice the greys & blacks on the top right growing?
Why is this happening? It’s unclear.
But this is a recent phenomenon.
Go back 2000 years & our ancients loved color.
Look at Augustus Caesar looking pristine in white stone.
Except, chemical analysis showed that the original was way more colorful.
Even the Parthenon, which looks like this today:
Was painted in deep hues at that time.
The Ancients loved color. But the color they loved most of all was Purple!
Why?
Because they had to grind 12,000 poor mollusks to make 1 gram of Tyrian Red Purple.
That’s why the color Purple was associated with kings. Poor Julius Caesar found out the hard way after he wore a Purple Toga, driving the anti-monarchy Senate mad enough to kill him.
When was the last time you saw Purple color anywhere nowadays?
Notice something funnier? What do we give our kids when we tell them to express themselves?
Notice how happily they use all the colors & draw things. Yet growing up is a process of greying everything we wear & touch.
So why make such a big deal about color anyway?
Because color, or the lack of it, makes us unhappy. Here are the color charts picked by - Healthy, Anxious & Depressed subjects.
Our world in 50 shades of Grey is literally depressing us.
Maybe we should make a stand against this colorless, grayscale world. Maybe when we pick a shirt, tank top, car or room color, we should choose glorious magentas, yellows, teals, violets!
Maybe we should bring a bit of color to our part of the world!
